Beware of false e-mails!
Dear friends of SER-Europe,
We’d like to let you know about recent attacks with fake emails to members and collaborators in the SERE network. Fraudulent emails have been sent using fake identities of SERE board members or officers, including Aveliina and Kris, in an attempt to deceive recipients. These messages may include invoices or other SERE-related information, attempting to deceive the recipients. To our knowledge, in addition to the board, some participants of SERE2024 conference have also been targeted.
Fraudulent emails have been sent from addresses such as:
- krisdecleer(at)outlook.com (falsely posing as Kris, referencing their position as treasurer)
- presidentboardofcommittfee(at)gmail.com (falsely using Aveliina’s identity)
These spoofing* attempts are highly convincing, often referring to official titles and positions within SERE. To help you recognise these attempts, we send you a screenshot of one of several examples.
Example of a spoofing attempt:
Please review the example carefully to familiarise yourself with the style and content of these false messages.
We ask all members to proceed with caution and take the following steps:
- Remain Vigilant Against Suspicious Emails
Do not trust emails or messages that appear to be from SERE board members but are sent from personal email clients (e.g., Gmail, Outlook) or other unverified sources. - Be Wary of Phishing Attempts
Fraudsters often use excuses such as technical issues, travel, or remote work to justify not using an official email. Please ignore such messages. - Report Suspicious Emails Immediately
- Save it in .eml format (e.g. in Outlook client it can be done by selecting More actions > Save as) and forward it as an attachment to your IT support team and us for further action. This format is necessary for official reports.
- Use the “Report Phishing” or “Mark as Spam” feature in your email client to flag the email for investigation.
Your awareness and caution are essential in preventing further incidents.
If you have any questions, concerns, or doubts about an email you’ve received, do not hesitate to contact us directly on a ser-europe.org email address for verification.
Thank you for your understanding and vigilance.
