In 2021, 33 European Expert Networks and Associations and more than 1400 scientists demanded ambition in the EU Nature Restoration Regulation. On 22 June 2022 the European Commission officially proposed its Regulation. The scientific and professional community, assembled at the occasion of the 13th European Conference on Ecological Restoration in Alicante (Spain), congratulates the European Commission on the Regulation Proposal. To further draw attention to the urgency of acting on ecological restoration, we have adopted this Declaration, including a Summary detailing the following highlights:
The time for action is now.
National Restoration Plans and the concept of ‘Favorable Reference Area’.
Climate change adaptation and mitigation and large-scale nature restoration.
The needs for staffing, financing, and knowledge gathering at Member State level to achieve ambitious restoration targets.
Increase the ambition level for the restoration of drained peatlands.
Additional categories of restoration activities in agricultural landscapes.
More concrete target levels and deadlines for restoration actions in agricultural, urban and forestry landscapes.
The target of 20% of the EU’s land and sea areas with restoration measures put in place by 2030 is feasible.
The Declaration is open to co-signing and all supports will be registered for a first list after 31 October 2022, encourage support from your colleagues as well. If your Institution is willing to adhere to this Declaration with its logo, please contact us.
