Despite its importance\, major unknowns remain. What are the dominant drivers of decomposition? How does decomposition translate into soil organic matter formation? What role do soil animals play in these processes? In this talk\, I will present research findings from various projects that contribute to filling these knowledge gaps. These findings question the use of common methods employed in this field of research and challenge existing views.” \nFrançois-Xavier Joly is a soil ecologist interested the interactions between plants and soil organisms\, and their impact on soil processes such as plant litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation. After a PhD in Montpellier and two postdocs (Arizona State University; University of Stirling)\, he is currently working as a junior group leader at the University of Vienna (TER\, CMESS). His research aims to better understand the drivers of decomposition\, disentangle the underlying mechanisms and respective roles of diverse soil organisms\, and bridge the gap between decomposition and soil organic matter formation. \nOur free seminars are open to everyone. DESCRIPTION:he Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service – CCIVS\, invites you to participate in a free online event on the Future of Soil taking place over three days between the 15-17 March 2022 13:30-15:30 CET. \nDuring the 3-day event\, we will hear from an environmental and human rights lawyer\, an expert on the state of soil in the EU\, a representative from UNESCO and from the FAO\, as well as indigenous land guardians\, farmers practising regenerative soil strategies\, activists\, volunteers\, young people and urban soil activists who will share why soil is so essential to life on Earth and how they are taking a stand on behalf of soil. \nDo you know what you can do to protect\, conserve and regenerate soil? Would you like to learn and be inspired? \nDay 1 will host a live conference on Zoom to discuss advocating for Soil rights\, the Soil4Life Manifesto and Positive Actions for Soil. Day 2 (Voices from soil guardians and activists from the field) and 3 (Volunteering for soil\, inspiring stories and voices from the youth) will be pre-recorded. You can write questions for the speakers in the registration form!
