SUMMARY:2021 Scottish Online Conference – Greening Our Grey: Improving the Biodiversity in Urban Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:We will hear from a range of excellent speakers about innovative approaches to using nature-based solutions and blue-green infrastructure in our urban environments and how they can deliver multiple benefits in terms of biodiversity conservation\, air quality improvements\, climate change adaptation and protection against flooding. We will also be exploring some practical implications of implementing blue-green infrastructure and showcase good practice. \nA review of the provision and delivery of biodiversity measures in housing developments will highlight where we are at\, and future opportunities. We will also discuss opportunities surrounding vacant and derelict land\, higher level policy issues\, and the importance of multi-disciplinary approaches and partnerships. \nAttendees will gain an increased understanding of the multiple benefits and opportunities for incorporating blue-green infrastructure and nature-based solutions in the planning process and evidence of approaches\, innovation\, and excellence that they can incorporate into future work. \n5th and 7th of October. Full programme and time details on event website. Cost indicated for non CIEEM members. \n

SUMMARY:#RestoreNature: The science and practice of Nature Restoration
DESCRIPTION:With SER Europe Chair Jordi Cortina\, and Board member Aveliina Helm in the pannel.\nAs part of the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030\, the European Commission has committed to propose a new law on nature restoration. This law can be a game-changer for biodiversity\, climate adaptation\, climate mitigation and with that for the protection of human health and fundamental freedoms. With nature being in a dire state across Europe and continuing to degrade in many places\, consensus is growing that we urgently need to stop deterioration and start large-scale nature restoration. However\, the details of how to actually do it are being debated now.\nThe EEB\, BirdLife Europe and WWF invite you to this webinar where we would like to put the focus on the science and practice of ecosystem restoration\, exploring particularly how we can and must restore key ecosystems\, the benefits for different sectors\, what restoration means in practice and what this requires for the new EU nature restoration law.\nWe will hear from key restoration scientists and stakeholders on the scientific context for this new law\, what the new law should look like\, what stakeholders need on the ground and how that can be implemented. Check the event webpage for more details of pannel.

SUMMARY:Woodland Creation\, Part Two: Implementation and Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:This is PART TWO of two online events which aim to stimulate reflection and discussion on potential approaches to woodland creation. This highly topical webinar will focus on woodland creation at case studies and the implementation of creation and restoration methods. Presentations will be delivered by a wide range of expert speakers. If ecological restoration and habitat creation inspires you\, this is not one to miss! \nThe first session\, held 2 July\, will have looked at strategic context and planning for woodland creation. \nTickets for each session are sold separately. \nWoodland creation has risen up the political and economic agenda with governments setting out ambitious targets to increase woodland cover. It is seen as having an important role in climate change amelioration as well as providing recreational\, biodiversity and other natural capital benefits. However\, reconciling different objectives and deciding on priorities can be difficult. \nThis webinar has a range of prominent and experienced speakers who will stimulate discussion and learning about different approaches to woodland creation\, with a focus on case studies and implementation. The case studies are from diverse landscapes and scales. \nSpeakers for this session include: \n\nDr David Hetherington (Ecological Advisor\, Cairngorms National Park) – landscape-scale approaches to woodland expansion in an upland environment.\nPete Leeson (Woodland Advisor\, Woodland Trust) – working with landowners on woodland creation\, including wood pasture systems and incorporating flower-rich habitats.\nHugh Chalmers (Land Management Advisor\, Tweed Forum) – creating native community woodlands in the Scottish Borders.\nHugh Dorrington (Owner\, Aveland Trees) – How to grow a resilient woodland. Advice from an experienced native tree nursery operator and contractor.\n\nSpeakers for the first session on July 2 include; Professor John Rodwell\, on how understanding the cultural heritage of trees can inform woodland creation\, Dr Keith Kirby on reconciling different objectives for woodland creation and Simon Mageean\, the Programme Director of the Northern Forest on the Woodland Trust’s approach to new woodland. Tickets to the first session are sold separately.

SUMMARY:EU Nature Restoration Targets: State of play and next steps
DESCRIPTION:SER Europe Chair\, Jordi Cortina will be a pannelist at this event organised by the European Parliament Intergroup on Biodiversity\, Hunting and the Countryside. Intergroups are not Parliament bodies and therefore may not express Parliament’s opinion\, and they can be formed with a view to holding informal exchanges of views on particular subjects and promoting contact between MEPs and civil society.\nThe European Commission’s EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy proposes ambitious restoration targets\, which also refers to legally binding targets for restoring nature. The measure constitutes a central element for the success or failure of the 2030 strategy.\n\n\n\nAs the non-legally binding target of restoring 15% of degraded ecosystems set up in the 2020 Biodiversity Strategy was not achieved\, the European Commission (EC) estimates that a legally binding target could make a difference to improve the situation. \n\n\nThis event will discuss the EC’s proposed approach and\, in particular\, the choice of opting for a binding target and evaluate the missing elements to improve the health and resilience of European rich ecosystems. \n\n\n\nFurther\, it will address other key challenges such as what criteria should apply to decide whether an ecosystem is restored\, how to restore degraded ecosystems at wider landscape level\, how climate change will affect restoration efforts and what role community-based conservation will play under the new restoration targets.\nRegister now at the link below. SUMMARY:Palermo\, Italy: 2nd Int. Symposium on The Role Of Plant Genetic Resources In Reclaiming Lands And Environment Deteriorated By Human And Natural Actions
DESCRIPTION:The symposium is organized under the aegis of ISHS (International Society for Horticultural Science). A link to the symposium website and other useful information can be found at: http://www.ispgr-it2020.it/ \nThe abstract submission deadline is 15 March 2020 \nThe objective of the Symposium is to share interdisciplinary knowledge about the actions needed for the recovery of degraded lands and deteriorated environment in a broader sense\, including the advancements in basic knowledge of plant species\, as well as about the most recent tools and techniques adopted in habitat restoration and land recovery. \nThe Congress will be structured into five main Topics:\nSession I:     Genetic diversity and germplasm conservation of wild and cultivated plants useful for land recovery;\nSession II:    From land degradation to ecosystem services;\nSession III:   Alien plant species and recovery of degraded areas;\nSession IV:    Renaturalization\, afforestation and biotechnology techniques for land recovery;\nSession V:     Biology and ecophysiology of plant species.
