DESCRIPTION:The first annual event of NetworkNature will focus on the semester theme on ecosystem restoration\, in line with current EU ambitions for achieving the European Green Deal and the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.\nSER Europe will be represented by Board member Richard Scott in the afternoon pannel at 16:40 “How to achieve Ecosystem Restoration targets through joint actions\, for NBS” \nNature-based solutions\, in Europe and beyond\, are an integral part of restoration efforts and represent the building blocks for a sustainable future\, including in the field of health\, agriculture\, climate change and more. Joint action and local\, regional and international cooperation are crucial to maximise the impact and spread of nature-based solutions. The recognition of their potential to address societal challenges has translated into an increasingly prominent role of nature-based solutions in the EU policy landscape\, with the European Green Deal providing an opportunity to mobilise their implementation and to increase financing. The event will showcase the vision and added value of Network Nature in achieving these objectives.\nWith the objective of creating a space for dialogue for the nature-based solutions community and to expand the community to establish partnerships with new and impactful actors\, the event will gather stakeholders from all target groups\, including policy makers\, scientific experts\, civil society as well as investors and financing institutions\, infrastructure planners and builders\, landowners and natural resource managers.\nThe event will be structured in three parts: an opening plenary (10am – 12pm CET); five parallel sessions (2pm – 4pm CET); a closing plenary (4.15pm – 5.50pm).\nDetailed agenda here.

This law can be a game-changer for biodiversity\, climate adaptation\, climate mitigation and with that for the protection of human health and fundamental freedoms. With nature being in a dire state across Europe and continuing to degrade in many places\, consensus is growing that we urgently need to stop deterioration and start large-scale nature restoration. However\, the details of how to actually do it are being debated now.\nThe EEB\, BirdLife Europe and WWF invite you to this webinar where we would like to put the focus on the science and practice of ecosystem restoration\, exploring particularly how we can and must restore key ecosystems\, the benefits for different sectors\, what restoration means in practice and what this requires for the new EU nature restoration law.\nWe will hear from key restoration scientists and stakeholders on the scientific context for this new law\, what the new law should look like\, what stakeholders need on the ground and how that can be implemented. DESCRIPTION:This is PART TWO of two online events which aim to stimulate reflection and discussion on potential approaches to woodland creation. This highly topical webinar will focus on woodland creation at case studies and the implementation of creation and restoration methods. Presentations will be delivered by a wide range of expert speakers. If ecological restoration and habitat creation inspires you\, this is not one to miss! \nThe first session\, held 2 July\, will have looked at strategic context and planning for woodland creation. \nTickets for each session are sold separately. \nWoodland creation has risen up the political and economic agenda with governments setting out ambitious targets to increase woodland cover. It is seen as having an important role in climate change amelioration as well as providing recreational\, biodiversity and other natural capital benefits. However\, reconciling different objectives and deciding on priorities can be difficult. \nThis webinar has a range of prominent and experienced speakers who will stimulate discussion and learning about different approaches to woodland creation\, with a focus on case studies and implementation. This highly topical webinar will focus on the strategic context and planning for woodland creation\, though presentations delivered by a wide range of expert speakers. If ecological restoration and habitat creation inspires you\, this is not one to miss! \nThe second session\, to be held on 16 July\, will look at woodland restoration case studies and practical implementation of methods mentioned in part one. \nTickets for each session are sold separately. \nWoodland creation has risen up the political and economic agenda with governments setting out ambitious targets to increase woodland cover. It is seen as having an important role in climate change amelioration as well as providing recreational\, biodiversity and other natural capital benefits. However\, reconciling different objectives and deciding on priorities can be difficult. \nThis webinar has a range of prominent and experienced speakers who will stimulate discussion and learning about different approaches to woodland creation. Presentations and speakers for this session include: \n\nSimon Mageean (Programme Director of the Northern Forest at the Woodland Trust) on planning the Northern Forest and some of the strategic thinking underlining the project.\nChristine Reid (Principal Conservation Advisor at the Woodland Trust) – introducing the Woodland Trust’s guidance for woodland creation.\nProfessor John Rodwell (formerly Lancaster University) – on how understanding the cultural heritage and ecology of trees can inform woodland creation.\nDr Keith Kirby (University of Oxford and previously English Nature) – on what constitutes the right tree\, right place and right reason for expanding woodland cover and reconciling different objectives.\nDr Kieron Doick (Head of Urban Forestry Research Group at Forestry Commission) – on woodland creation on urban/brownfield land the importance of soils.\n\nThe second session on July 16 will explore contrasting approaches to woodland creation across a range of landscape types and scales. SUMMARY:EU Nature Restoration Targets: State of play and next steps
DESCRIPTION:SER Europe Chair\, Jordi Cortina will be a pannelist at this event organised by the European Parliament Intergroup on Biodiversity\, Hunting and the Countryside. Intergroups are not Parliament bodies and therefore may not express Parliament’s opinion\, and they can be formed with a view to holding informal exchanges of views on particular subjects and promoting contact between MEPs and civil society.\nThe European Commission’s EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy proposes ambitious restoration targets\, which also refers to legally binding targets for restoring nature. The measure constitutes a central element for the success or failure of the 2030 strategy.\n\n\n\nAs the non-legally binding target of restoring 15% of degraded ecosystems set up in the 2020 Biodiversity Strategy was not achieved\, the European Commission (EC) estimates that a legally binding target could make a difference to improve the situation. \n\n\nThis event will discuss the EC’s proposed approach and\, in particular\, the choice of opting for a binding target and evaluate the missing elements to improve the health and resilience of European rich ecosystems. \n\n\n\nFurther\, it will address other key challenges such as what criteria should apply to decide whether an ecosystem is restored\, how to restore degraded ecosystems at wider landscape level\, how climate change will affect restoration efforts and what role community-based conservation will play under the new restoration targets.\nRegister now at the link below.
