SUMMARY:France\, Montpellier\, EcoSummit 2016\, Ecological Sustainability: Engineering Change (organized in association with SER)
DESCRIPTION:The 5th International EcoSummit Congress\, EcoSummit 2016 – Ecological Sustainability: Engineering Change\, will take place at The Corum Convention Centre\, Montpellier from 29 August – 1 September 2016. This conference series was founded in 1996 in Copenhagen\, as a forum to meet the demands of scientists working in several new ecological disciplines\, and who required a better understanding of the concepts and methods for a holistic use of ecology in environmental management. Since 1996\, EcoSummit has been taken around the world (Canada and China)\, with EcoSummit 2012 hosting 1600 participants from 75 countries in Columbus\, Ohio\, USA.EcoSummit 2016 will centre on the ecology of terrestrial ecosystems and all habitats that are integrated within those ecosystems\, including river networks\, wetlands and coastlines. Focus will be placed on fragile ecosystems that are more likely to suffer the consequences of climate change and anthropogenic pressure. However\, in the current context of an increasing world population\, changes in social habit (increasing world consumerism) and climate change\, it is evident that agriculture is being intensified but with a growing awareness of the need to preserve and use sustainably world resources. Therefore\, we will also address how terrestrial restoration can be carried out when the massive demand for food results in fragile ecosystems\, forests and marginal lands being turned over to agriculture. The central and fundamental topics of EcoSummit 2016 are as follows:\nTopics \n\nAgro-ecology\nAnthropogenic pressure\nArid lands and desertification\nBiodiversity and biological conservation\nBiological invasions\nClimate change\nDisturbance ecology\nEcohydrology\nEcological complexity\nEcological economics\nEcological engineering\nEcological indicators\nEcological intensification\nEcological modelling\nEcosystem creation and restoration\nEcosystem health\nEcosystem services\nEcotoxicology\nEnvironmental policy\nFragile ecosystems and hotspot management\nIntegrating socio-economics and ecology\nSustainability and resilience\nWatershed/River catchment management

SUMMARY:Belgium\, Antwerp\, Estuarine Restoration: from theory to practice and back
DESCRIPTION:more info: https://www.uantwerpen.be/en/conferences/estuarine-restoration/ \n\n\n\n\n\nWelcome to ECSA’s local meeting on ‘Estuarine restoration : from theory to practice and back’ which will be held from 5-9 July 2016 in Antwerp\, Belgium.\nScope \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor centuries\, estuaries have been impacted by habitat reclamation\, pollution\, hydrological alterations and dredging among many other human uses leading to a large loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is only recently that estuarine restoration became a hot topic and now many restoration projects are implemented worldwide. \nThe Schelde estuary situated in the north of Flanders and the south of the Netherlands is a typical example of this development. More than 150.000 ha of intertidal area was reclaimed over the last 1000 years and in the 20th century a large part of the estuary was anoxic for most of the year. Major waste water treatment and restoration works have taken place resulting in the improvement of the water quality and the recovery of the estuarine food web. Habitat restoration takes place at a large scale and range from vegetation management to managed retreat. In total more than 4000 ha of natural habitat will be restored. New techniques like flood control areas with controlled reduced tide were developed and implemented. The major project\, the Kruibeke Bazel Rupelmonde flood control area\, in total some 700 ha\, becomes operational at the end of 2015 resulting in more than 300 ha of new tidal marshes. \nTo celebrate this event\, the University of Antwerp (together with other local partners\, universities and institutes) is organising an ECSA Local Meeting on estuarine restoration. The aim of the meeting is to bring together scientists and practitioners from all over the world to exchange ideas and discuss the field of estuarine restoration. \nMajor topics dealt with during the conference are: \n\nSetting the objectives of restoration\nWhat measure is fit for which objective?\nEvaluation of restoration measures: are the objectives achieved?\nEcosystem services: a driving force for future restoration?\nPlanning for estuarine restoration\nThe role of environmental legislation as a driver for restoration\n\nThe conference will bring together both scientists and practitioners and result in new insights in the important field of estuarine restoration and lead to guidelines and concepts for further estuarine restoration projects.

SUMMARY:SER-Europe workshop: Developing and using donor site registers for near-natural re-vegetation\, Bernburg\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:The working group of Prof. Dr. Sabine Tischew organizes a workshop at the Strenzfeld Campus of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Bernburg/Germany. Within these two days\, you have the opportunity to hear about the use of directly harvested seed material in restoration and re-vegetation in different federal states in Germany. During field trips we will show you successfully restored species-rich flower strips\, field margins and grasslands in Saxony-Anhalt. The workshop will be held in German language. The workshop will be held under the auspices of SER Europe. \n  \nThe aim of the workshop is to remove uncertainties regarding the utilization of donor site registers and the use of seed material from autochthonous wild plants in restoration and re-vegetation projects. Based on specific examples\, participants can discuss typical problems and questions and will be presented with possible solutions. We also welcome suggestions to optimize our donor site register and our information system of nature-oriented restoration measures (www. spenderflaechenkataster.de). \n  \nMore info about the workshop here. \nVisit us: \n– if you are involved in planning\, implementation and evaluation of re-vegetation\, restoration and compensation measures;\n– if you are planning to establish perennial flower strips or to improve your field margins;\n– if you want to establish species-rich grassland or improve your species-poor grasslands.\nWe cordially invite you to attend our workshop for exciting discussions and networking: \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeed harvesting with a combine harvester on a species-rich lowland hay meadow.\nPhoto: Konstanze May\, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences \n\n\nGreen hay variant in the mined site Roßbach (Geiseltal lignite mining district Saxony-Anhalt) in June 2013\, 13 years after implementation. SUMMARY:12th European Dry Grassland Meeting\, Mainz\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:12th European Dry Grassland Meeting\, Mainz\, Germany \nFROM POPULATION BIOLOGY TO COMMUNITY ECOLOGY \nPlace: Mainz\, Germany\nTime: 22-27 May 2015\nPalearctic dry grasslands have a long tradition of community analysis and description\, leading to a detailed picture of these habitats\, especially in Central Europe. In contrast\, research on the biology of species and populations\, such as pollination biology\, dispersal ecology\, demography or population genetics\, is expanding rapidly. The connection between the two scientific disciplines is often weak although\, actually\, populations are part of communities and communities consist out of populations. We will therefore focus on this connection between population biology and community ecology for all dry grassland biota (invertebrates\, vertebrates\, non-vascular plants\, vascular plants\, fungi and lichens) as the overall topic of the next EDGM.\nSpecific topics of the conference:\n– Population biology of dry grassland species\n– Diversity and community ecology of dry grasslands\n– Management and conservation of dry grasslands\n– Socio-cultural aspects of dry grasslands \nThe European Dry Grassland Meetings are organised annually by the European Dry Grassland Group (EDGG\, http://www.edgg.org)\, a network of dry grassland/steppe researchers and conservationists from all disciplines. EDGG is affiliated with the IAVS (International Association for Vegetation Science) as a Working Group as well as with the EFNCP (European Federation for Nature Conservation and Pastoralism)\, and membership is free of charge. \n\nRegistration and deadlines: The conference webpage will open in autumn 2014. Deadline for abstracts is planned for February 2015. \nWe are looking forward to seeing you in Mainz\, Germany! \nMore info: EDGM 2015_1st call-flyer

SUMMARY:CEEWEB Academy on Green Infrastructure - Preserving our natural capital: Policy and Practice
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite you to CEEweb for Biodiversity’s upcoming event ‘CEEWEB ACADEMY ON GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE – PRESERVING OUR NATURAL CAPITAL: POLICY AND PRACTICE’ on 6-7 October 2014 in Budapest\, Hungary. \n  \nGreen Infrastructure is a holistic tool to tackle habitat loss while\ncontributing to smart and sustainable socio-economic growth. It\nprovides us with solutions for a better quality environment\, a\nhealthier society and a more prosperous economy. \n  \nGreen Infrastructure is especially important to the European Union due\nto its potential to help us preserve and enhance ecosystem services\nand adapt to climate change in a multi-stakeholder setting. \n  \nUnder Target 2 of the 2020 Biodiversity Strategy\, the EU committed\nitself to deploy green infrastructure and restore a minimum of 15% of\nEurope’s degraded ecosystems. With this year’s CEEweb Academy we would\nlike to draw attention to GI policy\, its implementation and the\npossibilities for cross-sectorial cooperation. \n  \nThe Academy aims to bring together public officers\, policy makers\,\nnon-governmental organizations and personalities from the academic\nworld to share and discuss experience and inspire new ways of thinking\nfor a more efficient preservation of our natural capital in Central\nand Eastern Europe in light of the most recent EU initiatives. \n  \nThe conference will consist of three blocks of presentations on key\ntopics (GI spatial integration\, GI at various scales and GI sectorial\nintegration) followed by both group and panel discussion. \nagenda of the event: CEEweb_Academy_Green Infrastructure_Agenda_6-7_Oct_Budapest \nYou can find the registration sheet on the event’s website:\nhttp://www.ceeweb.org/event/ceeweb-academy-on-green-infrastructure/ \nWe look forward to welcoming you at the event!

SUMMARY:SER Europe Summer School "Restoration of Mediterranean Ecosystems"\, Avignon (France).
DESCRIPTION:General information: download pdf here \nSER summer school 2013 is a 5-day program on the restoration of Mediterranean ecosystems held by the University of Avignon and Aix-Marseille University in France under the auspices of the Society of Ecological Restoration Europe (SER Europe). This course is primarily intended for PhD students who work in restoration ecology and related fields. \nThe program includes some lectures of specialists to provide theoretical background\, and many field trips to train practical research skills and learn about restoration projects on-site\, as well as short presentations of research projects by the participants. Thus\, the course will provide students with a general overview on restoration ecology as well as detailed information on projects\, techniques and skills. It will also give a frame for intensive exchange between participants\, researchers and practitioners. We will address topics such as\, restoration definitions and concepts\, the importance of T-zero studies and of restoration experiments\, long-term studies\, plant dynamics\, resilience and near-natural restoration\, the socio-economic and local context issues linked to restoration projects\, post-restoration management and the implementation of an habitat mitigation bank. \nProgram \nMonday\, May 13 \nMorning \n–          Welcome participants at IMBE / Université d’Avignon \n–          Conferences on human-environment interactions in the Mediterranean Basin\, on the characteristics of Mediterranean ecosystems and on the restoration ecology \nAfternoon \n–          Site visit – afforestation on Mont Ventoux\, dating from the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th: soil erosion was successfully controlled and forests devastated by overexploitation and overgrazing were successfully restored. This restoration is moving into a second\, dynamic phase as\, for several decades now\, Beech (Fagus silvatica) and Silver fir (Abies alba)\, which had remained within residual stands\, are recolonizing the planted pine (Pinus nigra\, P. sylvestris\, P. uncinata) and other conifer (Picea abies\, Larix decidua) stands. The new\, mostly heterogeneous and mixed stands which result from this “maturation process” form a complex landscape mosaic that opens interesting prospects for the sustainability of forest trees and their associated biodiversity. The excursion will focus on what past forest restoration has achieved and the current challenges faced by forest management (IMBE\, INRA d’Avignon\, ONF). \n–          Conference by IMBE on the restoration – restoration of natural and cultural heritage (open to the general public) \nEvening \n–          Stay in Avignon\, http://www.avignon.fr/en/ \n  \nTuesday\, May 14 \nMorning \n–          Welcome participants at Tour du Valat \n–          Conferences on the characteristics of Mediterranean wetlands\, conservation and restoration \nAfternoon \n–          Site visit – Salt ponds of Camargue (Salin-de-Giraud)\, future restoration project. Socio-economical issues and local context will be discussed (Parc Naturel Régional de Camargue Tour du Valat\, IMBE) \nEvening \n–          Stay in Arles\, http://www.arlestourisme.com/home.html \n  \nWednesday\, May 15 \nMorning \n–          Welcome participants at Marais du Viguerat \n–          Site visit – experimental restoration on abandoned ricefields followed by various types of management. The importance of post-restoration adaptative management will be addressed (Marais du Vigueirat\, Tour du Valat) \n–          Site visit – Visit of a vernal pool in Marais du Viguerat. Concepts of reference ecosystem will be discussed (IMBE\, Marais du Vigueirat\, Tour du Valat) \nAfternoon \n–          Site visit – Visit of the Cassaire: on-going wetland restoration project. The importance of pre-project measurements (fauna\, flora\, seed banks\, historical ecology\, landscape\, etc.) and various experiments will be presented and addressed (tests of different techniques and methods) (Marais du Vigueirat\, Tour du Valat\, IMBE) \nEvening \n–          Stay in Arles\, http://www.arlestourisme.com/home.html \n  \nThursday\, May 16 \nMorning \n–          Welcome participants at Réserve Nationale des Coussouls de Crau / CEN PACA \n–          Site visit – Reference ecosystem: steppe of La Crau in Peau de Meau. The concepts of resilience\, resistance and disturbance will be approached (Réserve Nationale des Coussouls de Crau\, CEN PACA\, IMBE) \nAfternoon \n–          Site visit – 1) Cossure which is the French government first experiment with habitat banking; 2) SPSE oil spill site; 3) Ménudelle quarry. Methods for the restoration of Mediterranean grassland ecosystems and the development of compensation through habitat banking in France will be discussed (Réserve Nationale des Coussouls de Crau\, CEN PACA\, IMBE\, CDC-Biodiversité\, Société des Carrières de la Ménudelle\, Société du Pipeline Sud-Européen). \nEvening \n–          Stay in Arles or Marseille (to be decided) \n  \nFriday\, May 17 \n–          Welcome participants at SIBOJAI (SIBOJAI) \n–          Site visit – SIBOJAI.
