SUMMARY:7th World Conference on Marine Biodiversity 2026
DESCRIPTION:The 7th edition of the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity will be organized in Bruges between November 17th and 20th 2026. The WCMB 2026 will fly the UN Ocean Decade flag\, as it has been endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Event. The overall theme of the Conference is “The marine biodiversity insights we need\, for the ocean we want”. As the Conference will take place a little over halfway through the UN Ocean Decade\, it will provide an excellent opportunity to take stock of ongoing actions and initiatives\, but also evaluate what still needs to be tackled by the end of the Decade. \n Learn more

SUMMARY:Nature Restoration Regulation in the Nordics Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The EU Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) marks an important milestone in European biodiversity conservation\, establishing legally binding targets to restore degraded ecosystems\, improve habitats and support biodiversity recovery. But how can these ambitious commitments be translated into effective restoration measures across Northern Europe? \nAs EU Member States prepare their National Restoration Plans\, attention is shifting from setting restoration targets to planning their implementation. This raises important scientific\, practical and policy questions: Which ecosystems should be prioritised? How can restoration success be measured? And what can countries learn from each other’s approaches? \nTo explore these questions\, the Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) Nordic Chapter is organising an online webinar bringing together researchers and experts from across the Nordic and Baltic region. \nThe webinar will introduce the Nature Restoration Regulation and its implications for biodiversity conservation\, followed by country-specific perspectives from Finland\, Sweden and Denmark\, as well as insights into restoration approaches in Norway. \nRegister here or scan the QR code on the event flyer above. \nProgramme\n18 November 2026 | 9:00–12:00 CET \n\n9:00 – Welcome and introduction: Åsa Berggren\, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)\n9:10 – What is nature restoration? Aveliina Helm\, University of Tartu\n9:30 – Introduction to the Nature Restoration Regulation: Bengt-Gunnar Jonsson\, Mid Sweden University\n10:00 – National Restoration Plan Finland: Minna Pappila\, Finnish Environment Institute\n10:20 – National Restoration Plan Sweden: Torbjörn Ebenhard\, SLU Biodiversity Centre\n10:40 – National Restoration Plan Denmark: Helle Tegner Anker\, University of Copenhagen\n11:00 – Restoration in Norway: Dagmar Hagen\, Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA)\n11:30 – Panel discussion and audience Q&A\n\nThe webinar offers an opportunity to gain insights into national restoration planning\, compare approaches across Northern Europe and discuss the challenges of turning restoration commitments into meaningful ecological outcomes. \nWe welcome researchers\, students\, conservation practitioners\, policymakers and everyone interested in biodiversity restoration and conservation policy. \n\nDate: Wednesday\, 18 November 2026\nTime: 9:00–12:00 CET (10:00–13:00 Finnish time)\nFormat: Online\nOrganiser: Society for Conservation Biology – Nordic Chapter\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you and encourage you to share this event with your networks!

SUMMARY:Deep-Sea Restoration Webinar Series: Knowing How to Restore
DESCRIPTION:Building on our previous webinar\, “Knowing where to restore?”\, this second edition takes a deeper look at the key aspects of deep-sea ecological restoration. We will explore why location matters\, how to identify where to restore\, and the tools and techniques that support these decisions\, including the mapping of potential sites. \nDrawing on local case studies\, experts and project partners will share how the REDRESS project uses degradation maps\, fishing footprints\, and habitat suitability to select sites for intervention\, and what limitations they encounter along the way. \nThe webinar will also cover further topics\, including affordability\, degradation under shifting conditions\, and data gaps. \nJoin us on 26 November 2026 13:00 CET. \n Register Here\n\nWe are pleased to welcome outstanding professionals and practitioners from the field. \n\nPresenters: \n\nDr. Paul Snelgrove\, Research Professor\, Department of Ocean Sciences and Department of Biology\, Memorial University of Newfoundland\, and Advisory Board member of the REDRESS project\nDr. Marina Carreiro-Silva\, Senior Scientist\, OKEANOS\, University of the Azores\n\nPanellists: \n\nDr. Jacopo Aguzzi\, Senior Researcher\, Spanish National Research Council (CSIC)\nDr. Furu Mienis\, Senior Scientist\, Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ)\n\nAfter the presentations\, the audience will have the opportunity to put questions to the panellists.
