SUMMARY:From Habitat to Harvest: restoration that works for fishers
DESCRIPTION:Event Location: Copenhagen\, Denmark \nEvent Date: 23 – 24 April \nHost Organization: European Bureau for Conservation and Development \nEvent Description: \nFisheries knowledge and management tools are essential to delivering marine restoration on the ground. This workshop positions fisheries as active contributors to habitat recovery and clarifies how fisheries management can support the EU Nature Restoration Regulation (NRR) implementation through practical\, workable measures. \nThis workshop focuses on how fisheries can continue to contribute positively to restoration\, while remaining viable and productive. The emphasis is on solutions that can be implemented in practice. \nThe workshop will explore ways fisheries can support and deliver habitat restoration under the NRR. This includes productive fishing grounds\, mixed-use areas and working seascapes\, not only protected sites. Fishers\, fisheries managers and national NRR planners will share experiences to identify measures that build on existing fisheries management\, reduce pressure where needed\, and enhance ecosystem functions that fisheries depend on. \nParticipants will be asked to share examples of fisheries contributing to habitat recovery\, clarifying how fisheries management can support NRR targets. The aim is to co-develop proportionate measures that strengthen stock resilience\, seabed integrity and habitats. \n Learn more

SUMMARY:Nature credits in the EU's coastal and marine ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:The Commission has undertaken to support Member States in the planning and implementation of measures to restore degraded coastal and marine habitats to reach the legally binding target under the Nature Restoration Regulation of covering at least 20% of EU sea areas with necessary measures by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. \nAs part of this effort\, on 7 July 2025\, the European Commission published a Roadmap towards Nature Credits\, outlining a strategic approach to stimulate private investment in nature-positive actions across the EU. The initiative aims to complement public funding by creating market-based incentives to protect and restore nature. It seeks to reward those who actively contribute to ecosystem restoration and conservation (including farmers\, foresters\, fishers\, landowners\, and local communities) and to encourage investors to support these efforts. \nThis workshop is part of the consultation on the Roadmap\, focusing on coastal and marine ecosystems. It will take stock of what has already been done\, see what has worked and what else is needed to develop transparent criteria and methodologies that prevent risks and ensure integrity on both supply and demand side while being simple and practical\, relying wherever possible on existing principles or standards. \n Register here

SUMMARY:Seascape Symposium II: Reconnecting the Seascape
DESCRIPTION:In 2022\, the first Seascape Symposium explored ecological connectivity across temperate coastal habitats\, such as seagrass\, saltmarsh\, native oysters\, and kelp forests\, with 150 attendees of scientists\, regulators\, policy makers and practitioners. The importance of integrated restoration of coastal habitats at the scale of the seascape is realised now more than ever\, with collapsed European native oyster ecosystems\, an accelerated global loss of seagrass over the last 100 years\, 50% degradation of global saltmarshes\, and 60% degradation of existing kelp forests. If global restoration targets are to be delivered\, it is time to build on our understanding of the temperate seascape’s potential to deliver for nature and people at scale. \nOn 4th and 5th June 2025\, ZSL will hold a second Seascape Symposium\, “Reconnecting the Seascape”\, in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth and the University of Edinburgh. Seascape Symposium II aims to connect coastal habitat experts to explore the principles of seascape restoration\, update on advances in restoration science\, habitat connectivity and monitoring\, and continue to build a community that can work together to overcome the barriers to scaling up coastal habitat restoration. \nFor more information and to book tickets (both in person and online registration options available)\, please visit https://www.zsl.org/news-and-events/events/seascape-symposium-ii-reconnecting-seascape . If funding is a barrier to your attendance at the Symposium\, please get in touch at scientific.events@zsl.org to discuss further registration options. \nYou can find the programme here: SSII programme overview

SUMMARY:Ocean Best Practices Workshop VIII - Striking Gold
DESCRIPTION:The eighth Ocean Best Practices System Workshop (OBPS WSVIII) focuses on promoting best practices in operational oceanography\, vital for interoperable ocean data and sustainable solutions. It includes plenaries on ocean knowledge\, policy\, and future perspectives\, with workshop sessions addressing marine conservation\, forecasting\, and sustainable Blue Economy. \nThe EU Mission Ocean seeks to protect and restore marine ecosystems by 2030\, fostering sustainability and resilience. This session focuses on governance and management of restoration projects in the Atlantic and Arctic\, highlighting best practices from projects like REST-COAST and CLIMAREST – both projects with which SER-Europe works closely to achieve their ambitious goals. Through case studies\, it emphasizes the transferability\, scalability\, and replicability of successful marine conservation efforts\, particularly in stakeholder engagement\, adaptive management\, and innovative technologies. Participants will gain practical insights into implementing these methods across different environments and scales\, with discussions on local contexts and challenges. The session supports standardizing practices for sustainable ocean management and resilient marine ecosystems. \nOur Marine Restoration Project Officer will present the Principles for Ecosystem Restoration developed as a contribution to the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration\, and which SER was a contributing partner. \nJoin us to find out more: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_sJBdUmMDTCmhCpHADRPv3A#/registration Blue

SUMMARY:(In)Coherences in EU Forest-Related Policies under the framework of the Nature Restoration Law
DESCRIPTION:Presenting a much-needed approach to repair damage to Europe’s forests\, the proposed EU Nature Restoration Law (NRL) is an unparalleled opportunity to prevent the worst impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss across Europe. Still\, it doesn’t come without challenges. One of the challenges for decision-makers\, forest managers and stakeholders is to navigate the complex environment of forest and forest-related policies at the EU level. Other challenges come with the integrability of the provisions made by the proposed NRL with diverse national policy and legal frameworks of the European Member States. \nThis upcoming Forest Restoration Talk will explore policy coherences and incoherences between the Nature Restoration Law and other pieces of legislation\, debating the main synergies and trade-offs that are likely to affect stakeholders and competing demands for a variety of forest ecosystem services. \nThe discussion will be based on an analysis of multilevel and cross-sectoral policy coherence conducted as part of the SUPERB project and building on an extensive mapping of forest restoration-related policies in Europe. \nRegister here!: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_nvooxl1kSMS4qvTns27bEQ#/registration \nDate and time: 18 October 2023 at 15:00 CET \nPlatform: Zoom \nSpeakers: \n\nMetodi Sotirov\, Senior Researcher & Assistant Professor in Forest and Environmental Policy\, University of Freiburg\nSimon Fleckenstein\, Project Researcher and PhD Candidate in Forest and Environmental Policy\, University of Freiburg\n\nRoundtable panellists: \n\nAna Rocha\, Director – EU Agriculture & Forestry policies\, European Landowners’ Organization (ELO)\nKaroliina Niemi\, Finnish Forest Industries Federation\nHélène Koch\, Senior Policy Advisor\, Confederation of European Forest Owners (CEPF)\n\nModerator: \n\nMagda Bou Dagher-Kharrat\, Principal scientist at the Mediterranean Facility of the European Forest Institute and coordinator of the SUPERB project
