SUMMARY:Achieving the new EU nature restoration targets: Needs and benefits (part of Think 2030 Conference)
DESCRIPTION:IEEP is organising a roundtable discussion on the upcoming EU Nature Restoration Law\, organised during the Think2030 conference on 30 June\, from 11:30 to 12:45 CET.\nThe Think2030 conference is a bi-annual event organised by Think2030\, a platform of leading policy experts from European think tanks\, civil society\, the private sector and local authorities. This year’s edition\, titled ‘A future-proof European Green Deal: Overcoming crises\, increasing ambition’\, will have a hybrid format\, taking place online and in Paris on 29-30 June.\nAs part of the conference\, IEEP will be convening a discussion on the EU Nature Restoration Law which is due to be proposed by the European Commission in June. The discussion will focus on the opportunities and challenges of scaling up nature restoration in the EU and how to ensure the successful implementation of the upcoming EU restoration law once adopted.\nAs a basis for the discussion\, IEEP and several other think tanks are currently preparing a policy briefing including recommendations addressed to the EU institutions and the Member States; a draft will be circulated to participants before the event. The aim of the session will be to discuss the draft recommendations and gather inputs from experts and policy-makers. DESCRIPTION:CEN and CENELEC are strongly committed to contributing to the achievements of the Paris Agreement and the UN SDGs supporting the international climate agenda\, as laid out in the London Declaration  signed by the standardization community early 2022. DESCRIPTION:Presenters: \nDagmar Hagen\, Astrid Skrindo\, and Berit Köhler – Norwegian Institute for Nature Research NINA \nRegistration to the webinar ➡ ➡ ➡ NOW OPEN 💡 💡 💡 \nThis is the 5th of the webinar series by SER Europe in 2022 – A SER Europe member will lecture us on the State of Ecological Restoration on her/his Country\, followed by a Q&A and a conclusion on best practices and further research+innovation networking.\n \nRestoration is a new activity in Norway\, compared to more populated areas of Europe. During the last decade a number of small\, and some few larger\, restoration projects have been implemented\, and in 2015 the first National Plan for Wetland Restoration was launched. The national commitments for climate change mitigation have been a driver for restoration\, as well as the pressure on natural habitats and species. In January 2021\, The Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and Norwegian Environmental Agency organized the National Kick-off conference for the UN Decade\, and the interest for ecosystem restoration is increasing among politicians\, managers\, scientists and the public.\nThe Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) is Norway’s leading institution for applied ecological research\, including ecosystem restoration. NINA is experienced in both applied research in ecological restoration\, and in carrying out restoration programmes. Ecosystem restoration is a broad topic\, and involves a range of sciences\, actors and professions. The majority of NINA restoration projects is therefore multidisciplinary in nature\, biologists and ecologists working together with social scientists and economists. Our researchers also work in collaboration with managers\, landowners\, authorities\, local user groups\, industry and contractors. More on the restoration activity in NINA can be found at Restoration Ecology (nina.no)\nNINA has been strongly involved in the\, by now\, largest restoration project in Norway\, transforming a 165 km2 large military area into a National Park. This remarkable project is also nominated as the Norwegian candidate for National Flagship for the Restoration Decade. Despite its importance\, major unknowns remain. What are the dominant drivers of decomposition? How does decomposition translate into soil organic matter formation? What role do soil animals play in these processes? In this talk\, I will present research findings from various projects that contribute to filling these knowledge gaps. These findings question the use of common methods employed in this field of research and challenge existing views.” \nFrançois-Xavier Joly is a soil ecologist interested the interactions between plants and soil organisms\, and their impact on soil processes such as plant litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation. After a PhD in Montpellier and two postdocs (Arizona State University; University of Stirling)\, he is currently working as a junior group leader at the University of Vienna (TER\, CMESS). DESCRIPTION:The first annual event of NetworkNature will focus on the semester theme on ecosystem restoration\, in line with current EU ambitions for achieving the European Green Deal and the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.\nSER Europe will be represented by Board member Richard Scott in the afternoon pannel at 16:40 “How to achieve Ecosystem Restoration targets through joint actions\, for NBS” \nNature-based solutions\, in Europe and beyond\, are an integral part of restoration efforts and represent the building blocks for a sustainable future\, including in the field of health\, agriculture\, climate change and more. Joint action and local\, regional and international cooperation are crucial to maximise the impact and spread of nature-based solutions. The recognition of their potential to address societal challenges has translated into an increasingly prominent role of nature-based solutions in the EU policy landscape\, with the European Green Deal providing an opportunity to mobilise their implementation and to increase financing. The event will showcase the vision and added value of Network Nature in achieving these objectives.\nWith the objective of creating a space for dialogue for the nature-based solutions community and to expand the community to establish partnerships with new and impactful actors\, the event will gather stakeholders from all target groups\, including policy makers\, scientific experts\, civil society as well as investors and financing institutions\, infrastructure planners and builders\, landowners and natural resource managers.\nThe event will be structured in three parts: an opening plenary (10am – 12pm CET); five parallel sessions (2pm – 4pm CET); a closing plenary (4.15pm – 5.50pm).\nDetailed agenda here.

This law can be a game-changer for biodiversity\, climate adaptation\, climate mitigation and with that for the protection of human health and fundamental freedoms. With nature being in a dire state across Europe and continuing to degrade in many places\, consensus is growing that we urgently need to stop deterioration and start large-scale nature restoration. However\, the details of how to actually do it are being debated now.\nThe EEB\, BirdLife Europe and WWF invite you to this webinar where we would like to put the focus on the science and practice of ecosystem restoration\, exploring particularly how we can and must restore key ecosystems\, the benefits for different sectors\, what restoration means in practice and what this requires for the new EU nature restoration law.\nWe will hear from key restoration scientists and stakeholders on the scientific context for this new law\, what the new law should look like\, what stakeholders need on the ground and how that can be implemented.
