SUMMARY:The Nature of Cities
DESCRIPTION:About The Nature of Cities\nWe are The Nature of Cities (TNOC)\, and the word “of” modifies Nature to mean the character of cities\, which we view through a green and blue and community lens. We believe the route to cities that are better for both people and nature is through transdisciplinary dialogue and collaboration. The mission of The Nature of Cities is to curate joined conversations about urbanism across ways of knowing and modes of action. We create transdisciplinary\, publicly available\, and widely disseminated programs\, events\, knowledge\, and engagements for green city making. We strive for cities worldwide that are resilient\, sustainable\, livable\, and just.\nBreaking Down Siloes in Cities\nThe Nature of Cities Festival is an annual experiment in transdisciplinary collaboration to radically imagine cities that are better for nature and all people.\nProgram\, registration and other information: https://tnoc-festival.com/

SUMMARY:CREAF-Talk - Bridging the gap between litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Friday 11th March 2022 \nTIME & FORMAT: form 12 to 1pm CET – Online \nSeminars will combine online and onsite formats (CREAF\, Sala Graus II\, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona\, Spain) but in all cases\, talks will be always streamed (not recorded)\, so they can be followed online. \nHOW TO CONNECT: Direct link to François-Xavier Joly’s conference. \nSUBSCRIPTON FORM: Subscribe to François-Xavier Joly’s talk! \n“The decomposition of plant litter is the dominant process by which soil organic matter\, the largest stock of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems\, is formed. Despite its importance\, major unknowns remain. What are the dominant drivers of decomposition? How does decomposition translate into soil organic matter formation? What role do soil animals play in these processes? In this talk\, I will present research findings from various projects that contribute to filling these knowledge gaps. These findings question the use of common methods employed in this field of research and challenge existing views.” \nFrançois-Xavier Joly is a soil ecologist interested the interactions between plants and soil organisms\, and their impact on soil processes such as plant litter decomposition and soil organic matter formation. After a PhD in Montpellier and two postdocs (Arizona State University; University of Stirling)\, he is currently working as a junior group leader at the University of Vienna (TER\, CMESS). His research aims to better understand the drivers of decomposition\, disentangle the underlying mechanisms and respective roles of diverse soil organisms\, and bridge the gap between decomposition and soil organic matter formation. \nOur free seminars are open to everyone. Our free seminars are open to everyone. Have a look at the CREAFTalks 2020 programme! \nFor more information\, please contact CREAFTalks coordinator Teresa Rosas t.rosas@creaf.uab.cat

SUMMARY:The Rewards of Nature Restoration: Will the new EU law deliver?
DESCRIPTION:Passionate\, committed people across Europe are restoring parts of Europe’s nature for us all. Their stories show that it’s possible to turn the tide on biodiversity loss and climate change\, and that it’s already happening. \nSee for yourself what nature restoration looks like at this event organised by BirdLife Europe\, the Endangered Landscapes Programme and UNEP-WCMC. \nYou will hear from the very people who’ve done restoration on the ground\, and see the fruit of their labour through a virtual photo exhibition. \nAhead of the release of the EU Commission’s proposal for a Nature Restoration Law\, you’ll be able to reflect\, together with a panel of decision-makers and experts\, on how this law can be a real game changer for both the people and the nature of Europe\, if it is done is the right way.

SUMMARY:Restoring our marine environment to tackle climate change
DESCRIPTION:Our oceans and seas play an indispensable role in climate change mitigation and adaptation. However\, deterioration of the marine and coastal environment is reducing its capacity to do so. \nA promising way to improve this capacity is by implementing measures that restore the natural capacity of the environment to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Restoring our marine environment and improving its biodiversity is imperative if we want to maintain all the ecosystem services it has to offer. \nIn this webinar\, we will look at nature restoration projects in two Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas. We will discover how different environmental factors are inventoried and how natural conditions are restored across the Mediterranean. The webinar will address the challenges and solutions of using nature restoration for climate change mitigation and adaptation. \nProgramme \n\n\nWelcome and introduction\nIsa Vroom – Policy Assistant at EUROPARC Federation.\n\nLIFE ADAPTABLUES project: Adaptation to climate change through management and restoration of European estuarine ecosystems\nBy Inés Mazarrasa – Researcher at the Environmental Hydraulics Insititute\, IHCantabria\, of the Universidad de Cantabria (Spain). \n\nROC-POPLife and ReLife\nBy Lorenzo Merotto – Marine Biologist and technical scientist at Marine Protected Area Portofino (Italy)\n\n \n\n\nLets talk about it! \nAll participants will have a chance to ask questions to the speakers

SUMMARY:‘Financing innovative nature-based solutions in cities: how to scale up for the next generation of urban NBS?
DESCRIPTION:The European Investment Bank warmly welcomes you to the webinar ‘Financing innovative nature-based solutions in cities: how to scale up for the next generation of urban NBS?’ on Wednesday 10 November at 15:00-16:30 CEST. \nRegister here to join us for the webinar on 10 November from 15:00-16:30 CEST. \nRecent events in Europe have demonstrated the urgent need to adapt our cities to the more frequent\, intense and devastating impact of climate change. Integrating nature-based solution (NBS) in cities can be a powerful way to address these impacts and contribute to improving the quality of life in cities. However the roll-out of NBS needs to happen faster and in a more systemic fashion. Based on the lessons learnt from specific urban NBS initiatives\, this session will discuss how NBS can be integrated at scale in cities and how such systemic changes can leverage private financing. \nOrganised by the European Investment Bank with the participation of the European Commission\, the World Resources Institute\, the cities of Vienna and Athens\, GINKGO Fund and ICLEI Europe\, this session will focus on urban nature-based solutions (NBS) supported under the Natural Capital Financing Facility and the Cities4Forests initiative\, with the aim of identifying recommendations for the next generation of urban nature-based initiatives. \n Speakers will include: \n\nStefanie Lindenberg\, Coordinator\, Natural Capital Finance Facility\, European Investment Bank  (Moderator)\nJulie Delcroix Coudun\, Policy Officer Biodiversity and Nature-based Solutions\, DG RTD\, European Commission\nElissavet Bargianni\, Landscape architect\, Department of Resilience and Sustainability\, City of Athens\nDoris Schnepf\, Managing Director of the Green4Cities: Green Deal Neighbourhood Vienna\nTodd Gartner\, Director of Cities4Forests\, World Resources Institute\nLaura Nolier\, ESG and Impact Officer\, GINKGO Fund\nHolger Robrecht\, Deputy Regional Director\, Sustainable Resources\, Climate & Resilience\, ICLEI European Secretariat\nVasco Ferreira Costa\, Senior Loan Officer Climate Finance\, European Investment Bank\nGuy Hudson\, Senior Advisor\, Innovation Finance Advisory\, European Investment Bank

SUMMARY:Network Nature: Achieving the EU Green Deal through nature-based solutions
DESCRIPTION:The first annual event of NetworkNature will focus on the semester theme on ecosystem restoration\, in line with current EU ambitions for achieving the European Green Deal and the start of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration.\nSER Europe will be represented by Board member Richard Scott in the afternoon pannel at 16:40 “How to achieve Ecosystem Restoration targets through joint actions\, for NBS” \nNature-based solutions\, in Europe and beyond\, are an integral part of restoration efforts and represent the building blocks for a sustainable future\, including in the field of health\, agriculture\, climate change and more. Joint action and local\, regional and international cooperation are crucial to maximise the impact and spread of nature-based solutions. The recognition of their potential to address societal challenges has translated into an increasingly prominent role of nature-based solutions in the EU policy landscape\, with the European Green Deal providing an opportunity to mobilise their implementation and to increase financing. The event will showcase the vision and added value of Network Nature in achieving these objectives.\nWith the objective of creating a space for dialogue for the nature-based solutions community and to expand the community to establish partnerships with new and impactful actors\, the event will gather stakeholders from all target groups\, including policy makers\, scientific experts\, civil society as well as investors and financing institutions\, infrastructure planners and builders\, landowners and natural resource managers.\nThe event will be structured in three parts: an opening plenary (10am – 12pm CET); five parallel sessions (2pm – 4pm CET); a closing plenary (4.15pm – 5.50pm).\nDetailed agenda here.

SUMMARY:#RestoreNature: The science and practice of Nature Restoration
DESCRIPTION:With SER Europe Chair Jordi Cortina\, and Board member Aveliina Helm in the pannel.\nAs part of the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030\, the European Commission has committed to propose a new law on nature restoration. This law can be a game-changer for biodiversity\, climate adaptation\, climate mitigation and with that for the protection of human health and fundamental freedoms. With nature being in a dire state across Europe and continuing to degrade in many places\, consensus is growing that we urgently need to stop deterioration and start large-scale nature restoration. However\, the details of how to actually do it are being debated now.\nThe EEB\, BirdLife Europe and WWF invite you to this webinar where we would like to put the focus on the science and practice of ecosystem restoration\, exploring particularly how we can and must restore key ecosystems\, the benefits for different sectors\, what restoration means in practice and what this requires for the new EU nature restoration law.\nWe will hear from key restoration scientists and stakeholders on the scientific context for this new law\, what the new law should look like\, what stakeholders need on the ground and how that can be implemented. Check the event webpage for more details of pannel.

SUMMARY:Woodland Creation\, Part Two: Implementation and Case Studies
DESCRIPTION:This is PART TWO of two online events which aim to stimulate reflection and discussion on potential approaches to woodland creation. This highly topical webinar will focus on woodland creation at case studies and the implementation of creation and restoration methods. Presentations will be delivered by a wide range of expert speakers. If ecological restoration and habitat creation inspires you\, this is not one to miss! \nThe first session\, held 2 July\, will have looked at strategic context and planning for woodland creation. \nTickets for each session are sold separately. \nWoodland creation has risen up the political and economic agenda with governments setting out ambitious targets to increase woodland cover. It is seen as having an important role in climate change amelioration as well as providing recreational\, biodiversity and other natural capital benefits. However\, reconciling different objectives and deciding on priorities can be difficult. \nThis webinar has a range of prominent and experienced speakers who will stimulate discussion and learning about different approaches to woodland creation\, with a focus on case studies and implementation. The case studies are from diverse landscapes and scales. \nSpeakers for this session include: \n\nDr David Hetherington (Ecological Advisor\, Cairngorms National Park) – landscape-scale approaches to woodland expansion in an upland environment.\nPete Leeson (Woodland Advisor\, Woodland Trust) – working with landowners on woodland creation\, including wood pasture systems and incorporating flower-rich habitats.\nHugh Chalmers (Land Management Advisor\, Tweed Forum) – creating native community woodlands in the Scottish Borders.\nHugh Dorrington (Owner\, Aveland Trees) – How to grow a resilient woodland. Advice from an experienced native tree nursery operator and contractor.\n\nSpeakers for the first session on July 2 include; Professor John Rodwell\, on how understanding the cultural heritage of trees can inform woodland creation\, Dr Keith Kirby on reconciling different objectives for woodland creation and Simon Mageean\, the Programme Director of the Northern Forest on the Woodland Trust’s approach to new woodland. Tickets to the first session are sold separately.
