SUMMARY:Nature credits in the EU's coastal and marine ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:The Commission has undertaken to support Member States in the planning and implementation of measures to restore degraded coastal and marine habitats to reach the legally binding target under the Nature Restoration Regulation of covering at least 20% of EU sea areas with necessary measures by 2030 and all ecosystems in need of restoration by 2050. \nAs part of this effort\, on 7 July 2025\, the European Commission published a Roadmap towards Nature Credits\, outlining a strategic approach to stimulate private investment in nature-positive actions across the EU. The initiative aims to complement public funding by creating market-based incentives to protect and restore nature. It seeks to reward those who actively contribute to ecosystem restoration and conservation (including farmers\, foresters\, fishers\, landowners\, and local communities) and to encourage investors to support these efforts. \nThis workshop is part of the consultation on the Roadmap\, focusing on coastal and marine ecosystems. It will take stock of what has already been done\, see what has worked and what else is needed to develop transparent criteria and methodologies that prevent risks and ensure integrity on both supply and demand side while being simple and practical\, relying wherever possible on existing principles or standards. \n Register here

SUMMARY:Webinar - National River Continuity Restoration Policies for European Ecosystem-based River Management
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe webinar is organised on the occasion of the launch of the publication of a study on the development and present status of 8 National River Continuity Restoration Policies from Austria\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Lithuania\, Norway\, Slovakia and Spain. The following aspects of the policies as the result of the study will be presented and discussed. \n\ncompleteness\,\nadministrative structure\,\nprioritisation method\,\nstakeholder involvement\,\nfinancing\nMonitoring and evaluation of the policies\n\nThe EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 needs complete policies with effective implementation to protect nature and and restore freshwater eco-systems. \nRepresentatives of countries involved in the study will reflect on the results of the study and representatives of the EU Horizon 2022 Projects MERLIN and Danube4All\, aiming at applying nature-based solutions in future water management\, will present the use of the results of the policy study in their work. \nYou can already register here and the full programme will become available in the first week of May.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOrganisations:\nSTOWA foundtion for applied research\, International Network of Basin Organisations and European Centre for River Restoration (ECRR) are cooperating in this study and this seminar\, bringing their complementary activities in the field of integrated water management to reach a wide audience with this comprehensive topic. SUMMARY:SER-Europe workshop: Developing and using donor site registers for near-natural re-vegetation\, Bernburg\, Germany
DESCRIPTION:The working group of Prof. Dr. Sabine Tischew organizes a workshop at the Strenzfeld Campus of the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in Bernburg/Germany. Within these two days\, you have the opportunity to hear about the use of directly harvested seed material in restoration and re-vegetation in different federal states in Germany. During field trips we will show you successfully restored species-rich flower strips\, field margins and grasslands in Saxony-Anhalt. The workshop will be held in German language. The workshop will be held under the auspices of SER Europe. \n  \nThe aim of the workshop is to remove uncertainties regarding the utilization of donor site registers and the use of seed material from autochthonous wild plants in restoration and re-vegetation projects. Based on specific examples\, participants can discuss typical problems and questions and will be presented with possible solutions. DESCRIPTION:General information: download pdf here \nSER summer school 2013 is a 5-day program on the restoration of Mediterranean ecosystems held by the University of Avignon and Aix-Marseille University in France under the auspices of the Society of Ecological Restoration Europe (SER Europe). This course is primarily intended for PhD students who work in restoration ecology and related fields. \nThe program includes some lectures of specialists to provide theoretical background\, and many field trips to train practical research skills and learn about restoration projects on-site\, as well as short presentations of research projects by the participants. Thus\, the course will provide students with a general overview on restoration ecology as well as detailed information on projects\, techniques and skills. It will also give a frame for intensive exchange between participants\, researchers and practitioners. We will address topics such as\, restoration definitions and concepts\, the importance of T-zero studies and of restoration experiments\, long-term studies\, plant dynamics\, resilience and near-natural restoration\, the socio-economic and local context issues linked to restoration projects\, post-restoration management and the implementation of an habitat mitigation bank. \nProgram \nMonday\, May 13 \nMorning \n–          Welcome participants at IMBE / Université d’Avignon \n–          Conferences on human-environment interactions in the Mediterranean Basin\, on the characteristics of Mediterranean ecosystems and on the restoration ecology \nAfternoon \n–          Site visit – afforestation on Mont Ventoux\, dating from the end of the 19th century / beginning of the 20th: soil erosion was successfully controlled and forests devastated by overexploitation and overgrazing were successfully restored. This restoration is moving into a second\, dynamic phase as\, for several decades now\, Beech (Fagus silvatica) and Silver fir (Abies alba)\, which had remained within residual stands\, are recolonizing the planted pine (Pinus nigra\, P. sylvestris\, P. uncinata) and other conifer (Picea abies\, Larix decidua) stands. The new\, mostly heterogeneous and mixed stands which result from this “maturation process” form a complex landscape mosaic that opens interesting prospects for the sustainability of forest trees and their associated biodiversity. Environmental and sociological impacts of industrialization on the wetlands will be discussed (SIBOJAI\, IMBE\, ECO-MED) and a pilot project of an integrated constructed wetland with local helophytes will be presented. \n–          Closing conference. \n  \nSaturday\, May 18 morning (optional) \n–          Welcome participants at Frioul Island (CEN PACA) \n–          Site visit – Frioul Island. Ecosystems influenced by sea spray\, attempts to restore the island and the effects of overabundant species\, such as the yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) will be addressed (CEN PACA\, IMBE). \nThe visit will be organized and free. You will just have to stay an extra night in Marseille and pay for your boat ticket (10 euro)  \nCost \nThe Summer School fee includes overnight stay with breakfasts (youth hostels) and lunches. The organizers also carry all further costs for lecture rooms\, working facilities\, travelling during the course and general course organization. \nThe Summer School fee will be \n200€ for Ph.D. students\, members of SER-Europe \n250€ for Ph.D. students\, if not members of SER-Europe \n250€ for others\, members of SER-Europe \nand 300€ for other participants\, not members of SER-Europe \nIt has to be paid after confirmation of participation (early April). Participants have to pay their own travel costs to the South of France (closest big airport is Marseille) and back home as well as costs for dinners.  \n  \nApplication \nInterested people should apply as soon as possible.
